Following guide lines are well proven and used for several years before publication.

  • Use standard quality of materials for console piping.
  • Straight pipe passing through wall may be acceptable, but avoid any type of joint in wall.
  • Keep distance of minimum 1.5 meters from electrical console cable ducts or switch or lamp board.
  • If any joint comes in wall, adopt standard procedure to make joint with one step higher schedule pipe and fittings.
  • Use metal threads at all outlet valve joints or tapping.
  • Do not use mild steel or other metal fittings which may attract corrosion and may be difficult to replace after few years.
  • Up to maximum possible extent avoid console piping. Water piping outside wall gives easy leak detection, easy and low cost repairing. If possible provide special passage for all utilities purpose which can be repaired easily without any major civil work.
  • Mild steel or poor quality of GI piping in console wall results in to corrosion which develops large cracks and becomes visible after wide crack on wall surfaces. Hence avoid metal piping in console design to safeguard home walls from crack after few years.
  • Always use submersible IP 68 pump with easy to remove and replace design piping. Do not grout or anchor pump on its foot for small house hold type application. Pump removal should be easy by pulling rope and without entry inside water tank.
  • Use cable passing though electrical conduit or PVC ducting. Do not allow pump’s power supply cable grouted in floor or wall..

Refer to given demonstration image, use only single pipe for all water supply and consumer outlets. This is having following benefits.

  1. Reduces piping cost up to 30 to 40 %
    1. Keeps pipe clean for several years due to forward and backward water flow.
    1. Gives good appearance by reducing piping on building walls.
    1. Leakage sources reduced due to less piping joint as a result of reduced piping length.
    1. It gives sudden high flow in case of overhead tank is empty and pump started to fill it. In two pipe system, it takes more time to give desired flow.
    1. All outlet points may be flushed with high water flow to keep it deposition free.

Safeguarding pump from solid in suction for effluent or waste water pumping

Generally waste water or water base effluent get mixed with some foreign material. Sometimes fluid itself contains sticky suspended or floating lumps. If such solid content enters in pump’s suction line, it consumes lots of time for cleaning strainers and piping. If strainer damaged internally, it may damage moving part of pump itself.

This method will make pump safer with easy cleaning of solids attracted towards suction pipe.

Here in this method pipe line suction strainer avoided which may need to dismantle frequently for cleaning. Also pipe line suction strainers are having limited space for solid storage and filtration area. This system converts whole sump in to a large strainer with easy cleaning and wide range of sufficient suction flow to pump. Also it prevents dry running of pump by providing large and elevated surfaces for suction of water to pump.

A cylindrical rolled wire mesh basket is constructed with bottom closed and top open. The wire mesh size is selected as per permissible safe solid handling rating for the pump. This cylindrical wire mesh basket is having length slightly more than sump depth and highest water level.

This cylindrical wire mesh screen is fitted on suction pipe as shown in image. This covers bottom base and vertical height up to maximum suction height level.

This arrangement of screen provides a largest possible area for filtration. Pump will get suction from all surroundings. When screen gets chock up with solids, simply by low pressure water jet, it can be cleaned easily. No need for pump discontinuity for strainer cleaning. Pump life and performance will remain better.

The cost involved in this modification is very low even if compared with regular size strainer. The most attractive thing is chock up is easily visible from outside to act proactively for cleaning it.

Method to reduce sediment in water storage sump

Here we considered a case in which underground bore water is pumped out in to sump storage tank.

If bore water directly pumped to storage tank, all sediment content in bore water will be transferred to sump tank, it will add sediments day by day. Finally after few months, sediment removal from sump tank will be a big project. Sediment dumped regularly in sump will reduce sump’s water storage capacity. It will increase bacteria level and other impurities. Finally during sediment removal from sump tank, we need shut down with no water supply to consumers for a specific long duration of a day.

Here a little correction is shown to avoid huge quantity of sediment settling in water sump.  By this method, we may reduce sump sediment deposition more than 90%.

We need to add following two devices in bore water outlet,

  1. Disc filter and
  2. Settling tank.

Disc filter prevents flow of sediment in pipe line above certain microns. Sediments collected in disc filters may be drained out on line or washed out afterwards.

Bore water afterwards allowed to enter in a conical bottom tank. In this tank appropriate quantity of alum is added for settling of sediment for few hours. After settling duration completion, water can be discharged out in water storage sump and water with concentrated sediment can be drain out from bottom drain point of tank. Here the settling tank should be with conical bottom. If water consumption is higher, we may repeat this procedure multiple times in a day. Generally settling duration varies according to type of sediment, but on an average sediment settling duration is 4 to 8 hours.

This method reduces sump sediment deposition quantity as well as it increases duration of cleaning cycles.
